Ice cream is a treat category, and no score changes that. What a score can do is help you compare one pint against another when you are standing in a freezer aisle with six similar tubs and very little time.

The six products below are among the highest-scoring frozen desserts in our database, ranked from highest to lowest: 96 down to 86. Most of them share a pattern. They are short-ingredient dairy pints, fruit-forward sorbets, or plant-based frozen desserts built on recognizable bases rather than long lists of stabilizers, gums, and artificial flavors.

Scores reflect what the label and ingredient list disclose. They do not measure taste, portion size, price, or how a given food fits your own diet, and a high score does not make a product universally healthy. Read it as a comparison tool, not a verdict.

How the ranking works

Each product gets a 0 to 100 score based on nutrition data and ingredient assessment from its packaging. Ranking direction here is top, so position 1 is the highest score in this comparison. Nutri-Score and NOVA values were not available for these particular items, so treat the score as the single comparison signal.

Useful cues in this category:

  • Ingredient length. Cream, milk, sugar, egg, and a flavor is a short list. Ten additives usually signals a more processed pint. Our NOVA food classification guide explains why that matters.
  • Added sugar per serving. Check the %DV on the Nutrition Facts panel and compare pints at the same serving size, since 2/3 cup and 1/2 cup servings are both common.
  • Sorbet versus ice cream. Fruit sorbets skip dairy fat but can carry as much or more sugar. Different tradeoff, not a free pass.
  • Dairy-free base. Coconut, cashew, and oat bases vary widely in saturated fat and additives.

Buying checklist and takeaway

Before a pint goes in your cart:

  • Scan the ingredient list first. Shorter and more recognizable is easier to evaluate.
  • Compare added sugar %DV at an identical serving size.
  • Note saturated fat, including in coconut-based dairy-free pints.
  • Decide your portion before you get home, not from the container.
  • Pick the flavor you actually want, since an unsatisfying pint tends to lead to a second dessert.

These six scored well because their labels are relatively simple, not because ice cream is a health food. Use the scores to choose between treats, then let portion size do the rest. For scanning products in the aisle, the Osana app returns a score in seconds.

Choose cleaner swaps before they land in your cart.
