Seed oil free snacks: 7 label-checked picks and how to spot hidden oils

Seed oil free snacks are easier to find than most shoppers think: look for chips cooked in avocado or coconut oil, snacks with no added oil at all, and treats where the only fat is nuts or cocoa butter. The seven picks below all have ingredient lists with no canola, soybean, sunflower, safflower, corn, cottonseed, grapeseed or rice bran oil. You will also learn the label wording that hides seed oils, so you can check any bag in about 20 seconds.

A quick note on the science: the health debate around seed oils is not settled, and this guide does not take a side. It is for shoppers who have decided to limit them and want to do it fast. For the background on where the term comes from, see our guide to foods with seed oils.
Which oils count as seed oils on a label?
"Seed oil" is a shopping term, not a scientific category, and it usually covers the eight refined oils in our list of seed oils. Fats from fruit, like olive and avocado, and animal or cocoa fats are not counted. The diagram below sorts what you will see on snack labels.

How to check any snack for seed oils in 20 seconds
Go straight to the ingredient list and search for the word "oil". Ingredients are listed by weight, so an oil near the start makes up a bigger share of the snack (21 CFR 101.4).
- Find every oil
Scan the list for "oil" and note each one by name.
- Watch for "and/or"
"Sunflower, safflower and/or canola oil" means any of them may be used, depending on the batch.
- Open the parentheses after "vegetable oil"
US rules require the oils in a blend to be named in parentheses. If none are named, treat it as a seed oil.
- Decide on lecithin
Soy or sunflower lecithin appears in small amounts. Whether it matters is your call.
Label trap: US rules allow fats and oils to be listed with "and/or" or "contains one or more of the following" (21 CFR 101.4(b)(14)). With an "and/or" list, any of the named oils may be in your bag. Our guide to seed oils in packaged foods shows where they hide most often.
Scanner apps can speed this up, but not all of them flag seed oils. We looked at that question in does Yuka check for seed oils and compared the options in our seed oil scanner app guide.
Frequently asked questions
What chips have no seed oils?
Look for chips cooked in avocado oil, olive oil, coconut oil or beef tallow, with a single named oil and no "and/or" list. Siete Grain Free Tortilla Chips, for example, use avocado oil only.
Is coconut oil a seed oil?
No. Coconut oil comes from the flesh of the coconut and is not one of the eight oils usually called seed oils. It is high in saturated fat, so it is a different trade-off.
Does "vegetable oil" mean seed oil?
Often. US labels must name the oils in a blend in parentheses after "vegetable oil", so check that list. If you see canola, soybean, sunflower or corn there, it is a seed oil.
Conclusion
Cutting seed oils from your snacks is mostly a label habit: find every oil, watch for "and/or", treat "vegetable oil" as a seed oil and decide where you stand on lecithin. Snacks with no added oil, like dates and pickles, make it easy, and chips cooked in avocado oil cover the crunchy craving. Check each new bag, because oil blends can change without a new package.
